Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) information and educational materials are available from government organizations, professional societies and associations, foundations, universities and other sources. The links on this page include a range of general and discipline-specific RCR resources to explore.


The National Institutes of Health (NIH) now requires that rigor and reproducibility be addressed in select research grants. In addition, a formal training component will be required for NIH-supported training programs in the near future. To address these new requirements, the CHOP Office of Academic Training and Outreach Programs has developed a summary of currently-available resources and information.


The RCR Faculty Toolkit provides guidance for communicating RCR training requirements to trainees, participating in RCR sessions, writing RCR program descriptions for grant applications, planning and monitoring completion of informal RCR instruction, and tailoring RCR topics and instruction for various research roles.

The Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Grant Template Language provides a description of CHOP's formal RCR Training Program and suggestions for describing informal RCR instruction. It can be adapted for use in the following: Institutional Training Grants (e.g., T15, T32, D43, T90/R90, TL1), Institutional Career Development grants (e.g., K12, K30), Individual Fellowship (e.g., F32, F33) and Individual Career Development Award (e.g., K01, K02, K05, K07, K08, K22, K23, K24) applications. This template language is not meant to replace individually tailored RCR education plans. Use and modify this information as appropriate for your specific application.

 All RCR training plans must include the following five instructional components: format, subject matter, faculty participation, duration of instruction, and frequency of instruction. The plan must discuss both formal and informal RCR instruction. These components are described in the NIH Update on the Requirement for Instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research NOT-OD-10-019 and are included in the template. Monitoring and tracking must also be addressed and are included in the template.

The RCR Instructor-Led Sessions combine lectures/discussions facilitated by research faculty and administrators. Interactive learning experiences include case studies, panel presentations, and roundtable exercises. Institutional policy, federal regulations, recent articles, best practices and ethical implications are reviewed for each topic as applicable.
