 RCR Training Requirement

The RCR training requirement applies to faculty, postdoctoral fellows, physician fellows involved in research activities, NIH-training grant fellows (T32) and individual fellowship grant awardees (F32), NSF-funded fellows, mentored K awardees, K12 scholars, senior fellows and career award recipients (F33, K02, K05, K24). Faculty assure that both formal and informal RCR training is completed, contribute to the design of RCR sessions, and participate as course facilitators, discussion leaders, and speakers.

RCR formal training is designed to be completed within two years from the beginning of the fellowship appointment or start date of a career development award. It is recommended that the online CITI RCR course be completed during the first year. In-person workshops, RCR Session 1 (4 hours) and RCR Session 2 (4 hours) can be completed in any order during the first or second year. K Awardees may complete the in-person component by serving as an RCR Instructor.

Year One

  • Online Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) RCR education completed once during the fellowship

Year Two

  • Eight hours of face-to-face education (RCR Sessions 1 and 2) completed once during each career stage
  • Additional trainee-developed plan to complete Informal RCR Instruction in conjunction with faculty mentor
